Abstract
Purpose: We aimed to investigate the effects of soybean diet and back massage on the neck skin of middle-aged women.

Method: Enrolled subjects were classified into four groups (n=10 each): control (Cont), soybean diet (SD; ingested 50 g soybean every morning), back massage (BM; received a 30 min back massage twice a week), and soybean diet and back massage (SDBM; ingested soybean and received a 30 min back massage twice a week). Changes in sebum, moisture, and pH levels and in the melanin and erythema indices of the neck skin were measured before and 12 weeks after the experiment.

Results: The sebum and moisture levels showed significant increase in all groups. The Cont group subjects showed a significant increase in the melanin and erythema indices but a decrease in pH. The SD group subjects had significantly reduced pH and melanin index; however, the change in the erythema index was not significant. The BM group subjects showed significantly decreased pH and erythema index; however, the change in the melanin index was not significant. Further, the SDBM group subjects had significant decrease in pH and melanin and erythema indices.

Conclusion: Middle-aged women in the SDBM group experienced the greatest benefits on the neck skin. The combinatorial effect of SD and BM may be useful as an indicator for changes in the body and have a role in further research.
